Topology Diaphragm
In high-end audio, the performance of the diaphragm largely determines how an earphone sounds. The Topology Diaphragm — a genuine breakthrough in acoustic materials in recent years — is raising the ceiling on what a dynamic-driver in-ear monitor can achieve.
The idea behind it is simple in principle: apply a coating of nano-scale particles to the diaphragm surface in a specific geometric pattern. The compound used, the thickness, and the geometry of that coating can all be tuned precisely to suit the desired tonal balance, which in effect allows the sound to be actively "edited." The concept grew out of Dr. Fang Bian's doctoral research, which showed that different nano materials have different structures — and therefore different properties. Applied to a diaphragm, this means the surface pattern changes both the frequency response and the distortion spectrum, so that altering the surface structure has a distinctly different effect on the sound.
Compared with a conventional dynamic diaphragm, the Topology Diaphragm greatly reduces the uncontrolled distortion caused by break-up across the diaphragm surface, bringing the driver's behaviour much closer to the ideal. There is, however, no empirical rule that predicts how a given topological pattern will affect measured performance: the required geometry can only be found by exhaustive trial and error. Interestingly, scale works against the same approach elsewhere — applying such a coating to the large-diameter drivers used in loudspeakers produces no particularly noticeable benefit.
The technology has since been used in a number of high-end audio products. HIFIMAN's former flagship in-ear monitor, the RE2000 — the first model to ship with a Topology Diaphragm — pairs a 9.2 mm dynamic driver with the technology, for a frequency response of 5 Hz to 20 kHz. From materials research to finished product, the Topology Diaphragm is bringing new momentum to the audio industry and giving listeners in pursuit of the ultimate listening experience a more compelling option.
