HYMALAYA R2R DAC
Proprietary R2R DAC
HIFIMAN's in-house HYMALAYA R2R DAC pairs the classic resistor-ladder architecture with proprietary FPGA algorithms, charting a course distinct from mainstream delta-sigma chips — and marking a significant breakthrough for domestically developed audio DACs.
What draws listeners to R-2R DACs above all is their natural, relaxed, analogue-like character. Because the resistor network decodes the digital code directly, the signal never passes through high-frequency noise shaping or the heavy filtering that a delta-sigma design requires, and can be treated as a "direct-output" analogue signal. Freed from the elaborate signal-reconstruction process of delta-sigma conversion, it keeps the distinctive quality that comes from the R2R architecture's more literal, "direct-translation" approach.
Technically, the heart of HYMALAYA is a ladder network built from a large array of precision resistors, working alongside a proprietary FPGA algorithm that handles the decoding. On the numbers that matter, total harmonic distortion measures 0.0025% and signal-to-noise ratio exceeds 120 dB — putting it on a par with the PCM1704, the classic benchmark of the R2R world. HIFIMAN has since gone further with the HYMALAYA PRO module, which uses 0.01% tolerance resistors and an upgraded algorithm to push THD down to 0.0012% at -6 dB, ahead of the PCM1704K on measurable performance.
Power consumption is where the chip becomes truly remarkable. HYMALAYA draws only about 20 mW — one to two orders of magnitude less than that of mainstream DAC chips such as the PCM1704, AK4497 and ES9038. That frugality allows it to run inside the Svanar Wireless true-wireless earphones; yet the same chip can also be deployed in two- or four-chip arrays for desktop and reference-grade decoding equipment, balancing portability against scalability.
With its own R2R architecture, strong measured performance and exceptional energy efficiency, HYMALAYA closes a long-standing gap in China's high-end DAC development. For listeners who value natural tonality and musicality, it is a new option well worth an audition.
